Part 4 – Getting and Giving Help for Victims of Sexual Assault

njnexclusiveSAAMKnowing all the signs of a victim and even ways to spot a possible abuser, does not remove the risk of the offense occurring totally.  It can greatly reduce the chances of an attack, but there has to be a plan in place if it does happen.  One of the best things a person can do for a victim is show unconditional support.  Being there for a victim is the most important part.  Not forcing the victim to talk about it, but encouraging.  But we know that this type of support can sometimes be best coming from a professional; a psychologist, a therapist, or even a case worker or organization that is designed to assist in these situations.

Sexual Assault Awareness – Part 2 Defining Victims and their Warning Signs

njnexclusiveSAAMIn part one we talked about what constituted a crime of a sexual nature.  This was everything from a peeping Tom to rape.  Now we will discuss what a victim is and some of the signs a person can look for that may signal that a person needs help.  Merriam-Webster, (2013), defines a victim as “one that is acted on and usually adversely affected by a force or agent” furthermore “one that is injured, destroyed, or sacrificed under any various conditions.”  To be put simply, a victim is a person who has been violated in some way.  This can be verbal attacks, physical attacks, emotional attacks, and psychological attacks.  In this writing we are going to focus on a combination of these.

Sexual Assault Awareness – Part 1 Identifying and Defining Crimes of Sexual Assault

njnexclusiveSAAMThe American Psychological Association, (2013), defines sexual abuse as “unwanted sexual activity, with perpetrators using force, making threats or taking advantage of victims not able to give consent” (para. 1).  This crime can also be referred to as sexual assault, which is more commonly associated with the immediate and infrequent type sexual abuse.  When that assault or abuse is forced upon a child, it is referred to as child sexual abuse.  There is also a crime known as spousal sexual abuse or marital rape, which will sometimes be labeled as domestic violence.  Another is sexual misconduct, which is when the perpetrator uses their position of authority to receive sexual favors.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month Starts Today

talkearlytalkoftenlogoweb_5Today begins the month long push for sexual assault awareness.  Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), runs through the month of April.

This year New Justice Network is participating with this campaign full throttle.  We are going to release an exclusive four part article dedicated to Sexual Assault Awareness among other things we will be doing to raise awareness.

Countdown to Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and this year New Justice Network plans on coming out of the gates at full speed.  This year we created an event of Facebook, which we encourage everyone to join, we are spreading the educational materials across the web, and we have even got merchandise that can be used to spread the word.
